Sir Sam’s Inn and Spa, a couples resort in Ontario, is a rare destination. Whether you’re a parent or not, we could all use an adults-only vacation, away from crying toddlers and a break from the responsibilities of childrearing. Family-friendly establishments have their place, of course, but if you’re seeking grown-up Ontario weekend getaways in cottage country, this tranquil retreat fits the bill. And, although many know Sir Sam’s Inn and Spa as a couples resort, it welcomes all adults, whether you’re with your significant other or your best friends.
Sir Sam’s Inn and Spa
Sir Sam’s Inn and Spa is located approximately three hours north of Toronto on the edge of Eagle Lake, in the Haliburton Highlands just 15 minutes from the town of Haliburton. If you prefer a boutique feel over large-scale properties, you’ll be pleased to know there are only 25 rooms/suites so service feels personalized and the atmosphere quite intimate.
With its serene, natural surroundings, this is where you can relax and recharge at the pool, on the outdoor patio or on a lakeside Muskoka chair (while warming up to a bonfire in the evenings!).
It’s not just about leisure here though; the inn’s history is worth highlighting too. As the former summer estate of Sir Samuel Hughes, a government minister who led Canadian soldiers through World War I and for whom the resort is named, Sir Sam’s Inn and Spa is marking a significant milestone this year: their 100th anniversary.
The Accommodations
Accommodations at Sir Sam’s Inn and Spa consist of cozy, country-style rooms on the lake or in the Main Inn with most of them including a walkout patio/balcony and wood-burning fireplace.
If, however, you are looking to splurge, enjoy more space or cook your own meals, the two-story, loft-like suites are the way to go. The lakeside Glen Eagle Suites feature a full kitchen, sitting area, bedroom with another bed in the upper loft, and balcony.
Dining
The culinary offerings at Sir Sam’s Inn and Spa are especially memorable. Chef Dave, previously with Aniz and Rhubarb restaurants in Haliburton, has earned a solid reputation in the community for good reason. He’s been cooking up his creations at the resort for over six years and it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
You can expect delicious, high-quality, perfectly cooked meals for breakfast and dinner in the romantic setting of the Twin Fires Dining Room.
Don’t forget to descend the restaurant’s spiral staircase to get a glimpse of the wine cellar below.
Lunch is served in the casual Gunner’s Pub where you can unwind by the fireplace, grab a pint or cocktail from the bar, or shoot a game of billiards, darts or shuffleboard surrounded by vintage photos that tell the story of the inn.
The Spa
For a unique experience to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul, the inn offers not only standard spa treatments, but a water circuit that massages different parts of the body with varying pressure in different areas of the pool.
At the large, circular bench (a.k.a. long bench), for example, water jets apply strong pressure to the neck and lower back, while the smaller, centre island massages the feet and calves.
The Champagne Grotto provides gentle, soothing stimulation with bubbles that give guests the sensation of being immersed in a glass of, well, champagne.
After spending 45-60 minutes in the water, you can lounge on the Balinese beds that overlook the water circuit and outside scenery.
Year-Round Destination
During the summer, there’s plenty to do at the inn to keep you busy. Go for a refreshing swim, venture on to Eagle Lake on a canoe, kayak or paddle boat, or on a Lady Hughes boat cruise.
On land, you can play tennis or take one of the inn’s bicycles out for a leisurely ride in the Haliburton area.
If you’d rather explore the area by car, attractions like the Dorset Fire Tower (for stunning views) and Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Preserve may be of interest.
There are several recreational activities available in the area during the winter as well. You can ski down a slope that’s just a 5-minute walk away, race down snowmobile trails or learn how to mush with Winterdance Dog Sled Tours (read about my dog sledding experience in this post).
Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend getaway in Ontario or an escape from the city with your besties, Sir Sam’s Inn and Spa can provide adventure, relaxation – or both.
Tips for Your Visit
- Don’t forget the sunscreen and insect repellent!
- Wifi is available throughout the resort but if you experience a weak signal, head to the main building.
- Reservations are required for dinner. Book early for best availability on busy nights.
